GameStop-published Song of the Deep surpasses 120k copies sold, mostly at retail

Insomniac's deal with GameStop to publish Song of the Deep seems to have gone well enough, as GameStop says it sold "well above" 120,000 copies since its July 12th debut -- with 80 percent at retail.

Insomniac's deal with GameStop to publish Song of the Deep seems to have gone well enough, as GameStop chief Paul Raines told investors this week that the game has sold "well above" 120,000 copies since its July 12th debut.

"Song of the Deep has been above our targets for the first six weeks, and is well above 120,000 units in sales," Raines said in a recent earnings call. "We have built a complete physical, digital and collectible ecosystem around this intriguiing IP."

Song of the Deep is the debut release of GameStop's recently-established GameTrust publishing division, and what's really interesting about its sales numbers is the way they're split.

Later in the call, GameStop COO Tony Bartel said that Song of the Deep's "digital penetration has reached 20 percent of unit sales." That means roughly 80 percent of this game's copies sold (Song of the Deep was sold for $15 on Steam, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One) were purchased at retail, in GameStops.

While the game also received a decent amount of critical acclaim, the 80/20 split in favor of copies sold at retail suggests that GameStop's heavy in-store promotion of the game was a significant sales driver.

GameStop now plans to continue selling the game and its "ecosystem" of tie-ins, even as GameTrust prepares to publish its next game -- Ready At Dawn's Deformers.
