During GDC 2016 earlier this month, Gamasutra and video game radio show One Life Left teamed up for the official GDC podcast. We had dozens of guests, some of whom we’ll be highlighting all week.
In the first podcast of the week (full list of guests here), we welcomed guests including Hannah Flynn, communications director at interactive narrative-focused game studio Failbetter Games (Fallen London, Sunless Sea), who spoke of the current momentum behind interactive fiction and why her studio started a fund for narrative games:
“There’s a movement around it at the moment in the last year or two. You can tell by all of the GDC talks…I think there’s a real appetite for it. I think interactive fiction is a great thing. It’s beautiful on a mobile device, people get excited about it. The more interactive fiction, the better.”
And there was Shahid Kamal Ahmad, former director of strategic content at PlayStation in Europe, and current indie dev. He reflects on his many years in game dev and in the game business:
“I left PlayStation in December to ‘go indie,’ as they say. And I didn’t get scared. I thought about it for quite a few years. I wanted to go back to making video games for a quarter of a century. I felt bad about leaving it in the first place. But I had no choice. It became absolutely impossible for a single person to make a game, starting from the early 90s. And I didn’t want to be making games in a team, or for, dare I say, consoles -- the consoles we had at the time. The consoles were effectively toys, cartridges, rigorous QA…oh it’s just utterly horrible to try and do [game dev] even as a very small team.
“So the industry found itself bolstering itself up in that time, and I worked within those constraints. So I guess I had to go through that. The last few years at PlayStation were a bit unexpected in a very very nice way.”
