Fear the reaper: Activision sunsetting Guitar Hero TV later this year

The online game mode attempted to keep the title fresh by granting access to a rolling setlist of tracks, with the aim of keeping players engaged in the long-term.

Activision plans to shut down Guitar Hero TV (GHTV), the online mode for Guitar Hero Live, on December 1, 2018.

GHTV attempted to keep the title fresh by granting access to a rolling setlist of tracks that could be accessed by spending credits, or waiting for specific songs to appear on one of the various live channels.

After three years on air, however, the mode will be laid to rest when Activision terminates the service and shuts down the GHTV servers in December.

Players will still be able to use their Hero Cash (in-game currency) until the service is sunsetted, so there's still plenty of time to get shredding.

In something of a bad news double-dip, Activision has also confirmed the iOS version of Guitar Hero Live has been yanked from the App Store. Those who already own the app can still take it for a spin, but a software update might render it useless.

Ultimately, the news marks the beginning of the end for Guitar Hero Live, which, despite being generally well-received, failed to meet Activision's own expectations.
