Scott Hartsman departed Rift and Defiance developer Trion Worlds in January, following a spate of layoffs. Months down the road with further layoffs, Hartsman spoke critically of his former company, saying:

"This model of game making is so fundamentally broken. We're approaching the point at which AAA projects need to be blockbusters just to sustain everyone in the ecosystem... That's what's broken."

All of that appears to be water under the bridge now, as Trion Worlds announced this morning that Hartsman is back with the company as its new chief executive officer, "effective immediately." Outgoing CEO and Trion Worlds co-founder Lars Buttler remains attached to the studio as a member of the board, a Trion representative was able to confirm for Gamasutra. However, his new role has not yet been defined. In an email to the company, Hartsman said: "We're going to rapidly be laying the groundwork for a new strategy at Trion -- one that's closer to the foundation of how we've had our wins so far, and then extending that base into the enduring success this company can, and will, be."
