Independently-owned Insomniac Games has confirmed at E3 new details of its four-player co-op game
Overstrike, published by Electronic Arts.
Overstrike for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 is Insomniac's first foray into multiplatform console development. The companies did not reveal a release date for the title.
While the studio is independent, it has previously remained committed to developing signature games for Sony PlayStation platforms, including the
Ratchet and Clank and
Resistance franchises. News of a multiplatform relationship with EA first
emerged last year.
Overstrike is a sci-fi title that involves a "shadowy organization has threatened to take over the world." The Overstrike 9 team is given the task to stop the threat.
EA said
Overstrike, a four-player co-op action game, will implement Insomniac's keen ability to design imaginative weaponry. The characters on Overstrike 9 include an "ex-mercenary, a lifelong thief, a gifted young scientist and a decorated detective."
Gameplay will be teamwork-intensive and require players to use a range of gadgets and weaponry to "to infiltrate and destroy enemy strongholds."
Insomniac CEO Ted Price said in a statement, "Overstrike presents a unique blend of features that have long been a part of the Insomniac DNA: high powered gadgets, action-heavy gameplay, memorable characters in a deep and mysterious universe and of course a touch of humor."
He added, "And since this is our first multiplatform game, we're especially excited to introduce ourselves to a new audience - one which may not have experienced our previous games."
