Colopl gunning to be big VR publisher, with new CEO in U.S.

Big Japanese mobile gaming company steps up its VR game, after already committing to invest $50 million in VR games, with a new CEO who aims to publish several VR titles a year.

In Japan, Colopl is known for being the publisher of White Cat Project -- a top-three grossing mobile game, known in the West as Rune Story. But in the U.S. it's quickly becoming synonymous with the push for VR games. A new CEO with plans to publish "multiple" VR games a year, starting in 2016, marks the company's next stpe.

"We will strive to develop VR games which provide the best VR experience so players don't want to come back to the real lives. We plan to develop outstanding VR games and I am excited to ramp up our Colopl NI team to succeed in the new VR reality,” says new U.S. CEO Jikhan Jung.

Jung formerly served as the U.S. division's COO, after a stint leading third-party publishing at Kabam and, prior to that, as a founder of Gala-Net, an MMO publisher that was acquired by Korea's Webzen.

Colopl announced a $50 million fund for third-party developed VR games late last year; Jung promises that the company will release a mix of internally and externally developed VR titles in the future.

Though the company is best-known for a more traditional mobile title, it's guns blazing for VR in the future.

"Seeing content is king when it comes to making VR a success in any region, I predict Japanese developers will ramp up the release of software as these upcoming devices approach their launch dates. Our job then is to make Colopl a vanguard in leading VR content development in Japan," Shintaro Yamakami, CEO of Colopl Next, told Gamasutra in January.
