Casual game maker Gameduell snaps up Nintendo icon Howard Phillips

The game industry veteran, best known as a face of Nintendo's Western business in the '80s, has joined Gameduell to serve as the German casual game company's head of game design and user experience.

Game industry veteran Howard Phillips, best known for his time spent as a key figure of Nintendo's North American operations in the 1980s, has joined Gameduell to serve as the German casual game company's head of game design and user experience.

While Phillips was highly visible in the '80s as a face of Nintendo's Western operations -- among other things, he helped launch Nintendo Power magazineproduced games like RC Pro-Am, and presided over Nintendo's 'Fun Club' --  he has remained active in the industry since leaving Nintendo in 1991, with time spent in key roles at companies like LucasArts, Microsoft and Chair Entertainment.

Back in 2012, he tried to move games beyond entertainment with a Kickstarter campaign for an educational mobile game, Gamemaster Howard's Know-It-All, that failed to meet its funding goal. In his new role at Gameduell, he's expected to help oversee the company's social and mobile game development projects.
