BBC Worldwide, the commercial subsidiary for the UK-government-owned British Broadcasting Corporation, will begin publishing British-made indie games internationally in the near future.
Executive producer Simon Harris announced the plans today at the Develop conference (as
reported by Develop), saying the publishing label would officially launch "in a few weeks."
The effort to encourage British development talent is already underway with a couple of unnamed indie studios, Harris said, adding that BBC Worldwide is eager to "get them into business outside of the UK."
"The UK market is a really good, really substantial gaming market, but to be really successful you have to work worldwide," he continued.
Harris said the company is looking to release indie titles on consoles, Flash, XBLA and PSN, noting that "over the next year you will hopefully start seeing a lot of innovation from us."
BBC Worldwide announced in February that it's working on
a free-to-play online multiplayer game based on the Doctor Who universe with
Puzzle Pirates developer Three Rings.
The outfit's previous gaming efforts include
a pay-per-play Weakest Link game show, complete with real-world prizes, and
a series of episodic Doctor Who adventure games.
