Attend VRDC and learn to build great brand experiences for VR

The first standalone Virtual Reality Developers Conference is coming up in November, so today organizers want to quickly highlight some of the many great brand-oriented talks taking place at the show!

The first-ever standalone Virtual Reality Developers Conference is coming up this November, and today organizers want to quickly highlight one of the many great tracks of talks taking place during the event.

Since VRDC is expanding from games to also encompass the use of VR/AR in entertainment, journalism, retail marketing and beyond, organizers want to quickly run down a sample of the talks you'll find on the conference's Brand Experience track.

For example, in his Brand Experience track talk on "VR and TV: The Wild West to the Living Room" BBC Worlwide's Bradley Crooks will share insight into the authoring process for 360 VR films from a technical, production and creative viewpoint.

The lecture will have real world examples of what went right, and wrong, in filming and development of VR experience around the popular BBC Earth programs -- and share with the audience what the team will do differently next time.

Also, Tom Sanocki (a veteran of Pixar and Bungie who's now the CEO of Limitless) will be speaking at VRDC about how to build compelling, interactive entertainment for VR.

In his talk on "Building Interactive VR Characters in 'Gary the Gull'"  Sanocki will speak to how Motional and Limitless built 'Gary the Gull': an interactive VR film featuring a seagull that talks to you -- and you can talk back!

Sanockhi will start with how interactive VR characters work, and how you can design stories where the viewer can communicate with the character to influence how the story is told. He will also talk about Limitless' VR creative development process for story and art, plus their unique method of previz for interactive scripts and storyboards. And no talk is complete without stories on what went well, and what went terribly wrong!

And in the "The Cone of Focus: Directing Techniques for Better Storytelling" The Soap Collective creative director Logan Dwight will explain how to map out a user's area of focus, direct their attention, and maximize immersion in VR stories.

Using a technique they call the "cone of focus", The Soap Collective has developed guidelines that maximize immersion, support user comfort, and can help us all tell better stories in VR. Dwight will explain how to apply these principles in everything from 360 video to full room-scale VR, enabling you to plan and execute better immersive storytelling.

So head over to the VRDC website now and register to attend the conference, which will feature a plethora of great VR/AR talks spanning games, entertainment, and beyond into subjects such as healthcare, journalism, travel, manufacturing, retail, live events, real estate, training, and so much more.

VRDC 2016 will take place November 2-3 at the Park Central Hotel in San Francisco. For more information on VRDC 2016, visit the show's official website and subscribe to regular updates via Twitter and Facebook.

Gamasutra, VRDC and GDC are sibling organizations under parent UBM Americas.
