If you've been hearing a lot about unlockable loot crates in the news lately, it's likely because you've heard about how Valve's Counter-Strike: Global Offensive crates are being used by third-party gambling sites to allow players to gamble real money on winning different items.

Now Psyonix intends to add the same kind of crates to Rocket League, but they say they've been paying attention to the uproar over the CS:GO crates, and are making adjustments to their upcoming loot system to prevent players from using their fancy car hats for gambling fodder. 

In a post on Reddit, Psyonix's Jeremy Dunham confirmed recent rumors of a key and crate system, in which players can spend money to open crates that contain random pieces of loot and they're intended help fund Rocket League's upcoming eSports events. 

Dunham writes that the crates will not be integrated with the Steam Marketplace whatsoever, which will prevent players from trading or selling the crates to third-party sites. He also confirms that the crates will contain strictly cosmetic items, and players will be able to opt out of the crate system with the push of a single button.

The latter note is an interesting move for Psyonix, since not many games can claim to deliberately offer players a way to avoid participating in in-game monetization or loot drops.
