Sledgehammer Games, an internal studio at Activision that was originally working on a third-person
Call of Duty adventure game, has revealed that the game was canned in favor of focusing on upcoming
Modern Warfare 3.
Parent company Activision originally revealed last year that the California-based developer
was working on an unnamed Call of Duty spinoff title.
However, talking to news site GameSpot, Sledgehammer's founders Glen A. Schofield and Michael Condrey
explained that the game was abandoned after the team was brought in to help develop
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 instead.
"We came on board to make a third-person action adventure game in the
Call of Duty franchise, and we were working on it about six months," explained Schofield.
"Yeah I think we had about six, eight months on that," agreed Condrey. "We had a prototype together that was pretty compelling and looked really good."
"But then the opportunity to work on the biggest thing in the industry with developer Infinity Ward, who's demonstrated that they know how to do exceptional software, was just such an opportunity."
Modern Warfare 3 will launch on November 8 this year. Steam's Valve confirmed earlier this week that
the game will include Steamworks integration on PC, adding a number of PC-specific features to this version of the highly-anticipated shooter.
