Nintendo has unveiled two key titles that will release for its upcoming Wii U console this holiday season,
New Super Mario Bros. U and minigame collection
Nintendo Land.
These two notable titles address some of the criticism Nintendo received last year when it launched it last system, the 3DS, with hardly any marquee first-party games. When it finally released
Super Mario 3D Land after eight months after 3DS's launch, sales for the languishing system took off.
This time, Nintendo will release
New Super Mario Bros. U, a co-op sidescroller similar to
New Super Mario Bros. Wii, during the holiday months.
New Super Mario Bros. Wii has sold 26 million copies since releasing in late 2009. The company will also put out
New Super Mario Bros. 2, another sidescroller, for 3DS in August.
Nintendo Land is a minigame collection that's meant to have the broad appeal of Wii's popular
Wii Sports games, but it also resembles the company's
Wii Play title, which went on to sell over 28 million copies. The "interactive theme park" features characters and setting from Nintendo's many franchises.
