$2M in Osmo preorders reveals demand for educational iPad games

Tangible Play has reaped roughly $2 million in preorders for the Osmo, an iPad educational game accessory, suggesting there's demand for devs to make kid-friendly mobile games for use in teaching.
Educational game/toy startup Tangible Play has managed to reap roughly $2 million in preorders for Osmo, its iPad accessory kit designed to turn the tablet into a more robust educational game platform. That's a decent chunk of change when you consider preorders started at $49, suggesting that there's meaningful demand for developers to build kid-friendly mobile games for use at home or in the classroom. The company has begun shipping hardware out to preorder customers, including more than 2,000 schools, according to a TechCrunch report. While Tangible Play isn't currently welcoming developers to make games for the accessory, it is adding features to some Osmo games that allow players to create and share their own custom challenges and hopes to allow developers to make games for the platform in the near future. The Osmo kit itself comes with the Osmo Reflector, a tablet stand, letter tiles and wooden shapes for use in the three Osmo-enabled iPad games currently available -- Words, Tangrams and Newton. The Osmo Reflector is just a mirror which fastens over the iPad's front-facing camera, enabling it to see things on the flat surface in front of the tablet when it's stood up.
