Should you hire a Freelancer for your Indie game studio?

Indie gamers feel overwhelmed during the game development process due to the sheer amount of work involved. This stress can be enormous if you are a lone developer. Should you consider hiring a freelancer to help you out? Let's find out.

Most game developers start out as lone developers. Some pick up a few team mates on the way and some follow the lone path. No matter which path you take, there will be times when you will need some extra help. Especially when you are working on an AAA title.

You can hire more team members to help you out but most of the time you want a person for a single job. This is when you need to hire a freelance game developer. Here is a check list to know if you need a freelance game developer.

  • Is the job, one time or repetitive?
  • Can you or any other team member do it after completing their task?
  • Do you have the budget to hire a freelancer?
  • Do you have a freelancer ready to go?

The last question is very important. If you need to search for a freelancer it's going to take time. If you can finish the work at that time then there is no need to hire a freelancer.

That is why you should always have a list of freelancers for the jobs you think you will need help in the future.

How to make a list of Good Freelancers?

I make it a habit to save a list of freelancers who I have worked with in the past. I only save them if they satisfy the following criteria.

  • Job delivered on time.
  • Quality of work
  • Communication.
  • Ability to understand requirements.

You cannot hire everyone to make a list. There are some key factors to look into before adding a game developer to your list

  • Portfolio of related work.
  • How responsive is the freelancer?
  • Past reviews and testimonials.
  • The cost to hire is within your budget.

Keep the list handy and fire out an email to hire them when you need.
