First released in 2001 for the Dreamcast and PlayStation 2, the musical rail shooter Rez went on to become a landmark in synaesthetic game design.
At GDC 2016, Rez producer and progenitor Tetsuya Mizuguchi took to the stage to recount the inspirations and influences that drove the game's design. In the course of his classic postmortem, Mizuguchi (who's currently revamping the game for release with VR support as Rez Infinite) spoke to the challenges faced by the Rez development team.
"Today we have music games as a genre," he noted. "But in the late 1990s, we didn’t have enough of these kidns of games to create a new category. We had to do a lot of research."
It was a fantastic postmortem look at the creation of a seminal game, and now you can watch the whole thing for free via the official GDC YouTube channel.
